The Solar Plexus Center in Human Design

In Human Design, the Solar Plexus is the center of feelings, moods and desire, and it is both a motor and a form of awareness. About 53% of people have it coloured in. When it's coloured in, it's your emotional authority: clarity comes with time. You sleep on the big ones. When it's white, you pick up the feelings already in the room.

The message you almost sent at 11pm

It's 11:04pm. Your thumb is over send. The message runs three paragraphs.

Every word in it is honest. Right now it's the truest thing you've ever written.

You can already hear how the conversation goes. You can feel how much better you'll sleep.

You send it. Or you don't. Either way, at 9am you read it back.

It sounds like someone else wrote it. Someone louder. Someone far more certain than you are.

Or it runs the other way. You're at dinner. Three people you love are laughing.

Somebody floats an idea. You hear yourself say "yes, absolutely, count me in". With your whole chest.

By Tuesday that same yes is sitting on your calendar like a stone.

If you know either of those nights, you're not flaky. You're not indecisive. You're not too much.

There's a mechanical reason for it. It lives in one triangle on the right-hand side of your chart.

It's called the Solar Plexus center. Learn how it moves and you stop arguing with your own feelings. You start reading them like a clock.

Start here this week. Next time a feeling arrives at full volume, write it down. Put the date and the hour next to it. Nothing else. Just the timestamp.

What the Solar Plexus center actually is

Your chart is called the BodyGraph. It maps nine energy centers.

Some come out coloured in. That's what defined means. Those are the steady parts of you, the same today as next March.

Some stay white. That's undefined, or open when nothing at all touches them. White is where you're porous to whoever is in the room. Flexible, absorbent, never quite the same twice.

The Solar Plexus is the triangle on the lower right. Two things make it odd.

First, it does two jobs at once. It's a motor: it makes energy, and a lot of it. It's also a center of awareness: it exists to make you notice something.

Most centers do one or the other. This one pumps out raw fuel and is meant to teach you something with it.

Its territory is what you feel. What you want. Your moods. How finely you read the air in a room.

Second, nothing else in the chart reaches this far. This is the ground under falling in love. Under protest and poetry.

It's also under feeling a friend's bad day in your own chest, before they've said a word.

The wanting never switches off. It pushes you toward the good stuff, so it walks you into the drop as well.

You stretch the highs. Up there you feel part of something bigger than your kitchen.

And you'll do almost anything to skip the lows. Down there the thing you hoped for didn't show up, and you feel completely on your own.

Here's the part that stings. About half of people act straight out of the swing, the second it lands. The other half sidestep feeling altogether.

Between those two habits, feeling gets misread nearly everywhere. At family dinners. Around money. In meetings. On third dates.

Not because anyone is doing it wrong on purpose. Because nobody was handed the manual.

One note on the body. This center is tied to the lungs, kidneys, pancreas, prostate and the nervous system. Feeling left to run at full tilt for years is understood to cost you something physically.

Worth knowing, because it's why this center gets taken so seriously. But human design is a language for knowing yourself, not medicine. Nothing here diagnoses or predicts anything about your body. For that, see a professional.

Small thing to try this week. Once a day, ask one question: did this feeling start in me, or did it arrive when I walked in somewhere? Don't solve it. Just answer.

The emotional wave: why there's no truth in the "now"

If your Solar Plexus is coloured in, feeling doesn't work on you the way films show it. No cause, reaction, the end.

You run a wave. Body chemistry moving on its own timetable. It carries you up and back down, whether or not anything is happening in your life.

The line that goes with this center is the most quoted sentence in the whole system. It comes from The Definitive Book of Human Design: "There is no truth in the 'now.' Truth reveals itself over time."

That sentence is doing a lot of work. It doesn't say your feeling about a job, a person or a plan is false.

It says it's partial. One frame out of a film.

Near the top, everything looks possible. You want to say yes to all of it.

Near the bottom, the same thing looks like a mistake you need out of by Friday.

The pattern is specific and almost universal. Sign up at the peak. Walk out at the trough. Both moves are an impulse wearing the costume of conviction.

Why is it so hard? Because a motor is pushing from underneath. Every feeling arrives with real force behind it.

And because this center is young. Not grown into itself yet. The charge wants out now.

Patience isn't the factory setting. The work of a lifetime is riding the energy instead of being fired out of the barrel by it.

What clarity actually feels like

This is the part most people get wrong. Clarity isn't a thunderbolt of certainty. It isn't a good mood either.

Clarity has landed when the decision has no charge left on it. The question stops being electric.

You can pick it up, look at it, and feel almost nothing. Just a quiet sense of which way it goes.

Deciding from still water is easier to describe than to do. The minimum instruction is old and simple: sleep on it.

What to do this week

  • Install a delay, not a rule. Pick a default waiting time for anything that matters. Overnight for small things. A few days for big ones. Not out of caution. To let the wave finish its sentence.
  • Get asked the right question. Two questions actually reach you: "Does it feel good to do that?" and "How do you feel about it?" Ask one friend to use those words instead of "what do you think?"
  • Track one decision three times. A line about it tonight. A line tomorrow morning. A line in two days. Don't edit the earlier ones. You'll watch the wave show up in your own handwriting.
  • Protect your "let me get back to you." Say it out loud a few times. Then it's there when the pressure is on. It isn't rudeness. It's how you decide.
  • Stop trying to repair the low. The low isn't a fault you have to fix before you're allowed an opinion. It's the second half of the information.

One more thing. You need room to feel the whole range of it, at your own speed, with nobody hurrying you.

Which means anyone who wants your answer this second is asking you to decide badly.

Note: Which centers you have defined depends on your birth time. If your time is approximate, check it in your chart before you take it as fact.

The three waves: tribal, individual and collective

Not every coloured-in Solar Plexus moves the same way. There are seven gates in this center.

They sort into three waves, each with its own rhythm. Which ones you carry comes from your chart.

It's why two people who both have emotional authority can feel nothing alike.

The waveRuns onWhat a normal week looks like
Need (tribal)The people you belong toYour mood moves with the deals and the closeness around you. Who shows up. Who pulls back. Who keeps their end
Passion (individual)You, on your ownSome days you're all in. Some days it's grey. Nobody caused either one
Desire (collective)Wanting the next experienceYou lean toward whatever you haven't lived yet, and the dare inside it

Underneath all three, the same nervousness tends to surface. A jitteriness about dealing with other people.

It makes sense. The chemistry never holds still long enough for you to feel sure.

That jitteriness isn't a character defect. It's the shape the awareness takes.

Here's each gate as something that happens on a Tuesday, with the fear that sits under it.

  • 37, family. You're the one who says out loud what the deal is. Who cooks, who pays, who picks up the kids. Underneath: being handed a traditional role and having to live inside it.
  • 6, friction. You move toward someone. Then you need the door shut for a day. Open, closed, open. Underneath: letting anyone see the actual you.
  • 49, principles. You take a principle in or throw it out, depending on what the group needs. Underneath: being turned down, and endings you couldn't see coming.
  • 22, openness. On the right day you'll listen to anyone. You'll say the thing nobody else will say. On the wrong day, not a word. Underneath: that nobody's listening, or that you've nothing worth saying.
  • 55, spirit. A private sadness on a grey Tuesday. It belongs to you and to nobody else. Underneath: not knowing what you're even meant to be passionate about.
  • 36, crisis. Appetite for the new thing, and the nerve it takes. Underneath: whether you're enough, in bed and in feeling.
  • 30, feelings. A strong wave running on wanting to feel something all the way down. Underneath: what may or may not come to pass.

Read that list again as weather, not as faults.

The one with gate 6 keeps moving close and then away. That's not unreliable in love. That's a valve doing its job.

The one with gate 55 feels a wash of sadness on a grey Tuesday. That's not broken. That's a passion wave at the bottom, with nothing to aim at yet.

The numbers come from your chart. Seven gates sit in this center. Which ones are yours depends on your birth data.

This week: find which of these gates you have. Write the one-line fear next to the one you recognise. Seeing it in your own words takes the sting out of it.

Defined vs undefined Solar Plexus: the comparison that matters

This is the most useful distinction in your whole chart. It settles how you're built to decide.

About 53% of people have this center coloured in. A bit under half don't.

Coloured inWhite
Where the feeling startsIn you. Your own wave, on its own scheduleIn the room. You pick up what's already there
How you decideRide the wave out first. Then answerFaster. In the body, in the moment
The usual trapSaying yes at the top. Walking out at the bottomAvoiding feeling altogether, or taking a borrowed mood as your verdict
The daily question"How do I feel about this today? And tomorrow?""Whose feeling is this, actually?"
The sentence that saves you"Let me sleep on it.""I need ten minutes on my own."

Three things worth being exact about.

If it's coloured in, it outranks everything else. It becomes your emotional authority: awareness that arrives over time, not all at once.

Your gut may answer instantly. Your head may build a flawless case. Neither one is in charge. The wave is.

If it's white, you're not unemotional. You feel plenty. Often more sharply than people with it coloured in, because a white center filters nothing.

What you don't have is a wave of your own to wait out.

Your skill is separation. You notice that the heaviness arrived when you walked into the room, and left when you walked out.

Watch the specific temptation here. It's to keep away from anything emotionally charged. That keeps you out of exactly the awareness this center is for.

Coloured in isn't better. It's a different job. One job is patience. The other is telling your own feeling apart from the room's.

This week, say your sentence out loud once. "Let me sleep on it", or "I need ten minutes on my own". Say it before you need it.

Solar Plexus center, Emotional Authority, solar plexus chakra — three different things

These three get blended together constantly. Here's the clean version.

  • The Solar Plexus center is a place in your chart. Everybody has it. The only question is whether it's coloured in.
  • Emotional authority is what that place becomes when it's coloured in. It turns into how you decide. Same mechanic, two names: one for the location, one for the job.
  • The solar plexus chakra belongs to a different tradition altogether. Human design borrows the anatomical name and roughly the same patch of the body. It isn't the same map. Talk of "activating" it doesn't carry over. Here, a center isn't switched on by practice or intention. Your chart either colours it in or it doesn't.

In the body, the solar plexus is the soft area in your upper belly. Just under where the ribs meet, above the navel.

Plenty of people with this center coloured in say they feel the wave right there. Like weather behind the ribs.

That's a handy body cue, not proof of anything. Read it, don't defend it.

So if you've been trying to open or clear this center, you can stop. Spend those ten minutes looking at your actual chart instead.

At work: the cost of deciding on the high

Expensive work mistakes are rarely about ability. They're about timing.

If your Solar Plexus is coloured in, watch these four moments.

  1. The offer call. You're flattered. The energy is up. They want an answer today. That's the top of the wave, exactly. Ask for 24 to 48 hours. Any reasonable employer gives it. The ones who won't have just told you something useful about the job.
  2. The resignation email. Written at the bottom of the wave, it reads like freedom. The information in the low is real: something genuinely isn't working. But don't launch the action from down there.
  3. The pricing conversation. Quote from a high and you give the work away. Quote from a low and you price it out of resentment. Set your numbers on a flat day. Read them off the document.
  4. The brilliant pivot. If the idea still looks good on day three, with no charge left on it, it's probably good. If it quietly evaporated, you just saved yourself six months.

And if you manage someone with emotional authority, do one kind thing. Stop asking for decisions inside meetings.

Send the question the day before. Ask again tomorrow.

You'll get an answer that holds. Not an enthusiastic yes you have to renegotiate on Thursday.

If your Solar Plexus is white, your risk at work runs the other way. You soak up a tense team's mood and carry it home as if it were your own verdict on your life.

A ten-minute walk on your own will tell you more than another hour in that room.

Pick one of the four moments above. The one coming up soonest. Write the exact sentence you'll use.

In relationships: intimacy on a wave

This is where the center matters most. It's also where it gets misread worst, because romance, tenderness and wanting all live here.

If yours is coloured in. Your partner will feel you close and warm, then further away. The distance will mean nothing at all.

Say that out loud early: "I move through highs and lows that aren't about you, and I need time before big decisions."

That one sentence prevents years of being misunderstood.

It also helps to notice how much of your conflict is scheduled rather than caused. The same grievance turning up at the same point on the wave, every time.

Don't treat your lows as truth or your highs as promises. A row at the bottom overstates everything. A declaration at the top over-commits.

The standard is the same here as anywhere. The real decision about the relationship is the one with no charge left on it.

If yours is white. You can walk into the kitchen and feel something that belongs entirely to the person standing next to you.

With a partner whose center is coloured in, their wave travels through you louder than it is in them. You may react to their low harder than they do.

The question that saves everything: is this mine?

Often the answer is no. And the right response isn't a conversation. It's a short absence.

About the pairing people always ask about: both partners with a white Solar Plexus. It's quieter, not better.

Nobody is generating the wave. So there's less drama, and also less of the particular depth this center brings.

There are no compatible charts. There are two designs you can understand.

This week, say your one sentence to the person it's for. Out loud, not in a text at 11pm.

Signs you're riding it well — and signs you're not

You don't need anyone to audit this for you. You need two lists.

Going well, coloured in:

  • Fewer decisions you have to undo. The yeses you gave still feel right three weeks later.
  • You can say where you are on the wave without panicking about being there.
  • Your lows get shorter. Not because you fixed them. Because you stopped fighting them.
  • The people around you know that "let me sit with it" means a real answer is coming.
  • You feel things all the way down and you don't act the second the feeling lands.

Going badly, coloured in:

  • A trail of dramatic starts and quiet exits. Jobs, projects, people.
  • Big announcements made at the top. Big withdrawals made at the bottom.
  • Treating a low as an emergency that demands a decision today.
  • Letting other people's deadlines set when you decide.
  • Apologising for being "too emotional" instead of using the feeling as information.

Going well, white: you can be around intensity without becoming it. You can tell your own feeling apart from the room's.

Going badly, white: you steer clear of anything emotional. Or you keep making decisions out of moods you picked up from somebody else.

Read the "going badly" list once. Don't score yourself. Just mark the one you did this month, and leave it there.

How to know whether your Solar Plexus is defined

You can't work this out from personality.

Plenty of calm, measured people have this center coloured in. Plenty of visibly emotional people don't, because a white center feels everything that passes through it.

The only way to know is to look at your chart.

You need three things: your birth date, birth time and birth place.

Time matters more here than almost anywhere else. An hour or two either way can change whether this center is coloured in.

That changes how you're built to decide. And how you decide is the whole instruction manual.

With Innerify you can work out your chart free in about a minute. We explain each piece in plain English: your type, how you decide, all nine centers, your profile.

If it turns out your Solar Plexus is coloured in, start small this week. Sleep on the next decision that has a charge on it. See what's left of it in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

Where is someone's solar plexus?

In the body, it's the soft area of your upper belly. Just under where the ribs meet, above the navel. In your chart, the Solar Plexus center is the triangle on the lower right.

How common is a defined Solar Plexus?

About 53% of people have it coloured in. That leaves a bit under half with it white or fully open. Nothing about your character tells you which one you are. Only your chart does.

What does it mean to wait out the emotional wave?

It means not deciding while the question still has a charge on it. Let the feeling come up and go back down. Then ask again. Clarity has landed when the decision feels quiet instead of urgent. Overnight is the floor, not the goal.

What's the difference between the Solar Plexus center and Emotional Authority?

Same mechanic, two names. The Solar Plexus is the place in your chart. Emotional authority is the job it takes on when it's coloured in: it becomes how you decide.
